I hope you all had as great and productive of a July as I did! It was creatively successful for me as I was able to release a few songs on an EP (which stands for extended play in comparison to a single with one song on it or an LP, standing for Long Play, which denotes a full length album), released some music videos for a couple of those songs, and even was able to make some videos of some previous concert footage! I’m truly thankful that God gives me the gifts to have a creative output. That’s not to say that it’s always easy or that a song is created in every recording session; or even every week. There are hard times that I experience with recording, booking shows, making videos – and so on; but it’s important to continue doing what I love to do and reap the benefits afterward. It’s not every day that I pray, but I believe that God God knows my heart and we have a very good relationship. This morning while I was reflecting on this past month, the pros and cons, and I really was appreciative of the good times I had, and I thanked God in prayer (I try to thank God more than praying for things; appreciation goes a long way). However, there were rough parts during the month, like that I still had to find a song to review! Luckily I think He pointed me towards the perfect one, and after last month’s review being so calm, this month I figured I’d give you a song with some energy to it! Let’s check out, “Woke Up This Morning” by Nathan Davis Jr!
“I woke up this morning, I got up and prayed
I’m thankin’ the Lord for another good day”
I was hoping this song had a music video, but since it was just released in February of this year, it appears that maybe we’re looking too soon! I really enjoy the bouncy element in the beat of this song. The chorus opens the song as it reminds us to thank God for another good day while we escape the grasps of the devil. The song transitions smoothly into the post chorus that Davis sings that there is ‘no second guessing’ his decision to walk with Christ in comparison to the rapping – staccato cadence of the opening chorus. Davis also sings about the peace within his life not being a chance of luck, but a blessing. He then goes on to mention the reliability of God keeping His promises and never giving up on any those who follow Him because He paid the price for all of us to be free from sin and the chance to give our life to Him.
“He never gave up on me
His promises He’ll always keep”
That’s it! The song repeats these 100% theologically accurate, simple and sweet lyrics twice and that closes the song out, without there even being a verse at all! I think that many songs mention theological topics in a way that is “commercially acceptable” in various ways, but the only issue is that sometimes these songs may be theologically challenging. Sometimes I even need to ask Pastor Drew about the accuracy of some lyrics, and he will tell me there are certain songs I’m unable to review! This one I can even attest to the complete accuracy of, and the relatability! There’s a term I’ve been trying to remind myself of called “K.I.S.S.” which stands for “Keep It Simple Silly.” With that I hope your August is full of even more blessings, less stress, good health, and even more self-perseverance for all of us in our endeavors; but not before waking up and being thankful for what we’ve already received from the Lord’s goodness.
