With February being the month of Valentine’s Day, I thought it would be a cool idea for a double review! To match the theme of the holiday, I wanted one of the reviews to be about a song that was love themed but still has spiritual themes within its lyrics. I was able to find the song titled, “True Love” by Emmanuel Zamar that checked all the boxes! Its classically soulful and bluesy sound caught my ear right away, but the lyrics were even deeper than I had expected, and very much focused around a true kind of love!
“I’ve never had a love like this,
Nothing compares to your presence
Seeking your glory from Heaven”
In the beginning of the song, Zamar is singing about experiencing a new type of love that he has not experienced before, a love that makes him seek the glory of Heaven. Then, as Zamar smoothly croons through the chorus, he goes on to explain how Jesus came to earth to save him when he was unable to save himself, even mentioning how merciful Jesus is. As Christians, we understand that he is speaking about being saved from sin, which causes him to have the realization that, “this is true love!” Even when the people had turned away from Jesus and crucified Him, He laid down His life to conquer death for all of us. Unconditional love, which is the type of love that Jesus has for us, has no condition. It persists and progresses through all tests of time and turmoil, even before we knew how to understand it and it continues indefinitely. The Bible, which was originally written in Hebrew, has 7 different types of what we call simply “love” in the English language. Ludas, Eros, and Pragma are the types of love we would generally recognize in association with Valentine’s Day. However, this song is focused on unconditional, agape love.
“This is true love,
You show so much mercy”
In the second verse Zamar sings about Jesus removing the stain of sin out of his life by renewing his life through Jesus’ giving His life up for not only Zamar but all of us who choose to love and live in the way Jesus taught us. Getting to know Jesus more and welcoming what He can do in my life has helped me in countless ways, and I’m sure in ways that I’m not even aware of. The love that Jesus has for all of us, truly is “True Love!”
