December is here and so is the snowy weather! After what seemed like a few warm days and a few chilly days, we’re approaching the tail end of 2023! This year has brought us a lot to be thankful for and things to grow into in 2024 as the season of the holidays and being surrounded by family and friends gets ready to take on the new year! Recently, I’ve been taking in the joy of the present moment and enjoying the company of the people I have around me. It’s important to cherish these moments.
“You say You’re working everything for my good and
I believe every word”
This month I chose to review a song I found a few months ago called “Symphony” by the band Switch. I love the story the song builds through the verses and the chorus of someone who is in need of God’s saving in their life but seeing that their suffering and their joy was all part of some thing bigger. The build of the instrumentation is a focal part in this song as the name suggests, as it matches the feeling in the lyrics. The way the instrumentation builds from the simpler beat in the beginning is one of my favorite parts of this track as it sets a good soundscape for the song. I think sometimes when God is using us for a greater purpose, sometimes it’s hard for us to see the end goal; even when it seems like we’ve done our part, sometimes things don’t go our way, but if we make it through the storm we will see the brighter day.
“Tune my heart to Your beat
Let me be Your melody
Even when I cannot see
But You orchestrate it”
In the first chorus is when the energy picks up in the song which leads up to having a brighter sound and more upbeat lyrics in the second verse. Switch even compares herself to being the melody of the symphony that God is creating within her life. What I also like is that she mentions that sometimes the work that God is doing may not be seen by us while we are being worked on by Him but believing in God is working throughout our lives is what faith is all about.
“Now I see, erased the scales from my eyes
Then played the scale in my life”
The third verse features Dillon Chase. While he raps his verse he has a violinist accompaniment that adds quick trills to Chase’s quick lyricism. He even makes reference to Act 9:18 when Saul has his sight restored by Ananias, causing scales to fall from his eyes, and Saul to leave behind his life of persecuting Christians. Dillon also uses wordplay to flip the meaning of the word scale from the ones that fell from Saul’s eyes to a musical scale. He also mentions how God is about to make “beautiful music” from all of his “unruly notes” which I found notable. Throughout time, sometimes God has chosen fairly ‘unruly’ people to spread the power of The Word, but through the creation of the “symphony” He is writing, He always makes the right choice. We know this because those people are remembered for many years after their time as people of God.
“Through all of this chaos
You were writing a symphony, a symphony”
With the cusp of the year upon us and the new year approaching, I can’t help but feel the optimistic excitement of the year ahead. Although this past year may have had some bumpy moments, personal and worldwide, my faith leads me to believe that there is something great just over the horizon. I hope the last month of 2023 brings you measures of joy, peace, and love that create a beautiful symphony.
