As we bring a close to September, we officially awake in October (Green Day reference, anyone?!) and welcome the season of Autumn. The changes in nature are brimming, and you can tell by the color changing on the leaves of the trees and the weather getting cool. I love sweater and cardigan weather, so this is my favorite time to be outside. My hammocking chill spot on the beach starts to move within the woods and around campfires around this time, but the party still continues! Speaking of which – that brings us to this month’s Yeshuwa Review! I was looking for something with some intensity that we haven’t heard in awhile which wound us up at this song for my rock/metal fans! While this title may sound a little rough, I can assure you it’s not intended to be as much of a health concern as it may initially sound; brace yourselves–and your ears as we take a listen to “Fall On Your Knees” by HolyName and Brook Reeves!
“I will trust in You
I will trust in You
Lead me onward”
This song starts out with a powerful drum solo before the guitars and vocals come in to give the sound depth that when paired with the grunge of the guitars and lightness of the vocals is full and ambient. The lyrics in this song, performed by HolyName’s Tommy Green, are somewhat of a chant in the way that they repeat as the guitars either float though the song or are giving us intense low distorted strums, which are all handled by the band’s instrumentalist, Joe Holt.
“Through the valleys
Through the deserts
To quiet waters”
The lyrics in the first verses are like prayers that are asking God to lead us and that we put our trust in Him. Putting our trust in God and His love is the way that we will be led onward as the song asks. Putting our faith into following God will give us what we need to move on through good times and bad. This is also an idea that is encompassed within the second verse of the song as it asks to be led through The Valley, which is a reference to Psalm 23, and through the desert, which is a reference to the book of Exodus. In the second verse, the song also mentions calming waters; throughout the Bible, we hear stories of water being tumultuous and unsettling. In this song we hear something similar as the lyrics ask for calm waters as a metaphor for finding peace within hard times in life.
“Fall down on your knees
Before the lamb
No other is worthy
All good comes from His mighty hand”
In the chorus of the song, the lyrics are to “fall on your knees before the Lamb, because no other is worthy.” This is referring to the vision that John experienced in Revelation of Jesus being like a slain lamb which is symbolic of Jesus in his way of giving himself as a sacrifice for our sins. The chorus also mentions that, “all good comes from His mighty hand” and this goodness that God has is only received by us letting God lead us.
“Wash the filth from my eyes
Savior of wretched man
My dead bones are at Your feet”
The outro, or final verse, of the song is the hardest part of the song with Reeves screaming vocals! The raspy grit his vocals have made his part short but sweet coming in after HolyName’s frontman Tommy Green’s softer vocals for the majority of the song. Reeves also mentions that “[His] dead bones are at [Jesus’] feet” which is another reference to the Valley of Death just before the bones, symbolic of the Israeli people who were cast out by the Babylonians, have God breathe life into them which causes them to come to life, which is also symbolic of God being able to restore their lives in their homeland.
“Fall to your knees”
This Fall, I hope you get some time to enjoy the warmer weather and the changing of the leaves, sometimes around the campfire and maybe even a s’more or two… oh, and make sure you take good care of all your extremities.
