Whenever the temperature starts to cool down, I’ve started to make it a personal challenge of mine to see how long it is until I need to turn the thermostat from the ‘cool’ to ‘heat’ setting. This year I can proudly say that I made it to the last week of October before I had to prepare for the November briskness set in!
Last month, we checked out some music that had a spiritual message in it that was vastly different from our usual type of review with some heavy metal. This month, as I usually do for November, I have one of my own songs to review, but this time there is a small catch. Currently, at the time of writing this, the song isn’t out yet! However, you’ll be able to check out this song–plus a bunch of others on the self-titled album, “Yeshuwa Myers,” which will be released on November 19th! On this album you can expect other songs like this one, leaning more into the R&B side of my music with biblical and spiritual references for you to keep your ears perked up to be able to catch! Since we’ll be able to listen to this song together later in the month, we’ll take a look at the poetry within the lyrics for now, and then on November 19th, you’ll be able to revisit this review when the song is released! You’ll have to let me know if it sounds the way you imagined it would! Let’s review: “God With Me” by Yeshuwa Myers!
This song has shorter verses and chorus which makes the song flow a little faster but also makes it catchier. Usually a verse, in pop (most contemporary) music, is 16 bars long, but this isn’t a set rule. This typically sounds the best and gives space for things like storytelling within a song, but I wanted to have the chorus break this up more frequently into an 8 count verse and a 4 count verse that is sung through twice. The song starts out with the chorus like this:
“I’ve got a band of angels (I’ve got a band full of of angels)
I’ve got God with me (I’ve got God)
I’ve got a band of angels (I’ve got a band full of of angels)
I’ve got God with me (I’ve got God)”
I wrote this chorus in response to people who have suggested to me that I combine my musi-cal talents with others to form a band. While I’m sure it would be an excellent experience, I feel that me and God are my band. The tagline I use, “It’s Like That Cuz Yeshuwa Made It,” has two meanings; one meaning being because I made the music and that being the reason the music is made in the way that it is, but also because Jesus made it, as in purely us existing. God exists outside of me but also within me, which is why I feel that God is with me, especially when I am being musically creative. After the chorus of the song it goes into the first verse.
“Guide my footsteps (I’m with that)
Someone to guide my path,
Give direction (where I’m at)
Someone I need to ask
If I’m on the right road, need GPS
Good thing got God’s Protection Services
saving us”
It’s only through Jesus that we’re able to truly find ourselves. Walking alone through life is a choice of a path the one can take but usually somewhere along that path we stumble and sometimes it’s hard to get up or continue that path. Through Jesus and His love and living in His way, I’ve personally found that it’s a more joyous and love-giving path. When we’re spiritually damaged, coming to Jesus and finding his love and forgiveness for us is the way that we’re able to continue on our path of our lives and be ourselves fully and truly, which is similar to 1 Corinthians 13:12. In this verse in the song there is also a play on the acronym for GPS from being the Global Positioning System that helps us locate our way to the grocery store when we sometimes forget, to ‘God’s Protection Services’ which I’m sure are at work right now as God is guiding many of us away from less favorable situations, even while we’re unaware.
These are short verses with a lot packed in them! Now, let’s go back to the chorus before we take it to the bridge!
“I can trust you with my deepest secrets
I know you won’t lead me astray,
Speaking to you when I need some peace
I know you’re one call away”
With another nod to ‘being known fully’ we know that God knows everything about us; from the beginning of our lives, to the end, and even the parts in-between. We can trust that God is reliable and trustworthy and wants the best for us. With that being said, that doesn’t mean reliable in the way of granting us everything we wish for… but reliable in the way that His love is unconditional and if we choose to live in the way that Jesus lived we can have faith that God’s love is alive within us. It’s time for the chorus!
“Need your love, unconditional,
For my soul, it’s essential
Like these words I’m given to sing
I swear it’s a spiritual thing”
Living in God’s love is essential for leading a life of peace and tranquility and additionally, being able to navigate to that in times of stress and doubt by knowing that God will take care of things. It’s something you have to witness for yourself, it’s truly a spiritual experience. Chorus once more, before the last verse!
