No matter what the weather is like, it always seems like I’m running behind on time. I find myself rushing to and from place to place fairly often. From work obligations, to family events, to being with friends, to making time for ourselves, it’s easy for anyone to get wrapped up in making it from place to place and not being able to fully embrace in the moments as they pass. I think this is especially prevalent when we’re trying to make it to family vacations or vacations with friends and time is running thin, the inevitable last minute things always wait to happen until the last minute. While on my music hunt for you this month, I wasn’t finding any songs that really captured me, until I was playing some new indie songs I found and this one came through my speakers and while it doesn’t explicitly name God, Jesus, or the Holy Spirit. I found that reading between the lines for “Where Does The Time Go” by in Paradise, was where the spiritual connection clearly was.
“Seasons change but we’ll put these days
In picture frames, where does the time go?
Where does the time go?”
The song is so tranquil it almost becomes ambient at certain points. The acoustic guitar gives a sense of vulnerability while the warm keys add a comforting feel to the lightness of the guitar strings and softness of the vocals. The lyrics of the song tell a story of experiencing life through different moments that we should fully be present in to make those moments what they ought to be made of; sincere genuine connection. The first verse kind of breezes over a few broad scenarios as the chorus reminds us to take in these moments. We can relate the first verse to being like a picture; capturing a moment in a way that can be shared with other people, showing us doing something and even who we were with.
“‘Cause next thing you know,
Where does the time go?”
However, the second verse dives into more of the feeling that happens within these moments that make them worth capturing. These are moments that we can all relate to, and while we should fully submerge ourselves in these moments, it’s easy to overlook that these moments, as is life, is a God given gift that’s different and uniquely shaped and crafted just for us. God gives us these moments to help build our story and to show us the path that we, and if we allow, Jesus to walk with us and show us the beauty of life throughout our lives. While some things big be big and last long, but some are small and last only a moment, and if we’re too busy focusing on something else (that possibly will come in time) we might miss the beauty and softness and the briefness of what is right in front of us that we’ve been searching for all along.
“Remember this, remember this,
If life’s a gift then it’s ours to live”
This July, I hope you take time to make an experience within the moments you share with others, your relationship with God, and also yourselves. Freedom starts from within, as does the way we see the world. I like to make it a point to thank God for the moments He and I create with and without the company of others. This month, I hope you do the same. And while you’re fully embracing those moments, just take occasional peeks at the clock–just so you aren’t running late!
