Each month I’m supposed to find a song that has spiritual references orthat we are able to apply to a spiritual theme. Last month’s song choice was a little hazy until we uncovered it, so this month I figured we could even out the scale and review a song that we have to dig a little less for the spiritual meaning and also how it ties into May in other ways. Let’s take a look at a song you may be hearing on the radio that we’re about to add to our playlist, “Thank God” by Kane & Katelyn Brown!
“I was lost
You found a way to bring me back
Needed forgiveness
You always gave me that”
In other songs that I’ve considered reviewing I’ve heard artists mention that “we treat God like rental insurance” and I believe that is true for many. A lot of Christians keep God in their back pocket as a “just-incase” way out of a bad situation; but as long as things are going good, we kind of keep God as a back thought. It’s important that we keep God in our thoughts and give praise and prayer in the good just as much-if not more than-the bad times. The lyrics of this song capture the feeling of thanking God in gratuity in a beautiful way.
“And it’s crazy
How you saved me
Hand on the Bible
Don’t know how I got you
But I couldn’t ask for more”
The story of this song comes from the married couple searching for a song for them to sing together after music brought them together after working in a mutual musical crowd. Kane had already had an established music career at the time and Katelyn was still emerging as an artist. Once Kane heard the song and thought it would be a great fit for them he showed Katelyn who was apprehensive at first but Kane brought the best out of her for this song. The shy couple feel the most comfortable together on the stage with the confidence and reassurance from each other to be and do great. You can feel the love they have for each other in the music video for “Thank God” on YouTube.
“You loved me when you didn’t have to
But you did and you do, and he knew
Thank God for giving me you”
You may be surprised at my song choice since I may not seem to be a fan of country music. However, being as involved in music and art as I am, I’ve learned to break down the barriers of genre and enjoy music that I do for what it is, regardless of genre. I’ve noticed that knowing the genre can give people a subconscious bias towards the song before gaining their own impression, which would then be solely based on the artistic impact of the song.
I felt like this would be a good fit to the playlist of songs we’ve been building. This is a great song that puts me in a great mood with a simple and straightforward message. I hope this is your anthem for May as we celebrate the love we have for our families, each other, and God himself.
